Hendrik Kerstens (Dutch, b.1956, The Hague)
Hendrik Kerstens is a self-taught photographer best known for portraits of his daughter, Paula, that reinterpret the visual language of Dutch Old Master painting. He left a business career in 1995 to pursue photography, initially documenting Paula’s childhood before developing carefully staged compositions distinguished by luminous lighting, dark backgrounds, and everyday materials fashioned into elaborate headdresses. Plastic bags, aluminum foil, and paper towels introduce humor and contemporary domestic references into images recalling Vermeer and Rembrandt. Exploring family, identity, and the passage of time, his practice has evolved into a collaboration with Paula, with recent works credited to Hendrik & Paula Kerstens; both live and work in AmsterdamAvailable Works
