Gao Brothers 高氏兄弟 — Gao Zhen (b. 1956) and Gao Qiang (b. 1962)

the Gao brothers are Chinese contemporary artists born in Jinan, Shandong Province, who have collaborated since 1985 across sculpture, photography, installation, painting, performance, and writing.  Their politically charged practice examines authoritarianism, collective memory, and the relationship between individuals and state power, often through provocative reinterpretations of Mao Zedong’s image.  Their father’s imprisonment and death during the Cultural Revolution profoundly shaped their work, including their well-known Miss Mao sculptures.  Exhibited internationally, their work is represented in collections including the Centre Pompidou, Princeton University Art Museum, and Kansas City’s Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
