Michael Eastman (American, b. 1947)
Photographer Michael Eastman documents architectural interiors and facades which present what he describes as mysterious narratives about time and place. Within his distinctive bodies of work he has covered diverse cities such as Havana, Paris, Rome, and New Orleans, and produced large and small-scale images which share precision, monumentality, and a vibrant sense of color. He often is drawn to exploring the form and texture of the natural process of decay. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Cener of Photography, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and other important public institutions. Our featured image “Three Fans” includes the surreptitious inclusion of a pair of women’s red panties, drying on a clothesline on the balcony of a Havana flat.
