Zhang Hong Chung (b. 1971, Beijing, China)
Hong lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas, but has an international audience for her work that often uses disembodied human hair to explore her identity as an immigrant, woman, and mother. Educated first at Beijing’s prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts, and in the U.S., after moving to California, she received an M.A. from California State University in Sacramento (2002) and an M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis (2004).
For over twenty years she has combined traditional skills with new concepts to present fresh ideas about gender, cross-culture, the environment, and social justice. She works both on small, delicate works such as Untitled (Broken Cigarette from the Hair Series), and can also translate these ideas and drawings into a massive scale. She has exhibited internationally and her work is in notable public and private collections such as Sylvain Levy DSL Collection in Paris, The White Rabbit Collection of Contemporary Chinese Art in Sydney, The Ministry of Culture of China in Beijing, Harvard Art Museums, Spencer Museum of Art at University of Kansas, and the Kansas City International Airport.
