Karel Appel  (Dutch/French, 1921-2006)

Appel pioneered a vibrant and new form of action-based Expressionism defined by the COBRA group.  He was largely inspired by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Jean Dubuffet yet his style was essentially unrestrained.  He often referred to his approach as “Kinetic thought” reflecting the spontaneity of fantasy, creativity, and movement.  He received the UNESCO Price at the Venice Biennale (1954) and a Guggenheim Fellowship award (1960); his works are in museum collections worldwide.
